FAMILY DOLLAR REPORTS SALES FOR THE

MATTHEWS, N.C., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (NYSE: FDO), a discount store chain operating 1,923 stores in 31 states, reported sales for the month of February 1993 of approximately $87.0 million, or approximately 1 percent below sales of $87.9 million for the month of February 1992. Sales in comparable stores for the month of February 1993 decreased approximately 8 percent from comparable store sales for the month of February 1992.
There were 28 days in February 1993 compared to 29 days in February 1992, and the extra day was a Saturday. This extra day last year aided total and comparable store sales in February 1992 by approximately 9 percent, and contributed to the total store sales gain of 37 percent and comparable store sales gain of 30 percent in February 1992. With this difficult comparison, the Company's plan was for a decrease in comparable store sales in February 1993. Sales in the second half of February 1993 also were adversely affected by bad weather in many areas where the Company operates stores. The impact in February 1993 of the loss of the extra Saturday and the adverse weather conditions at the end of the month is reflected in the fact that for the first 15 days of February 1993 compared to the first 15 days of February 1992, total store sales increased approximately 15 percent and comparable store sales increased approximately 6.5 percent. For the 28 days of February 1993 compared to the first 28 days of February 1992, total store sales increased approximately 6 percent and comparable store sales decreased approximately 1 percent.
For the second quarter ended February 28, 1993, sales were approximately $356.5 million, or approximately 12 percent above sales of $317.8 million for the second quarter ended February 29, 1992. Sales in comparable stores for the second quarter ended February 28, 1993, increased approximately 4 percent above comparable store sales for the second quarter ended February 29,1992.
For the six months ended February 28, 1993, sales were approximately $661.1 million, or approximately 13.5 percent above sales of $581.7 million for the six months ended February 29, 1992. Sales in comparable stores for the six months ended February 28, 1993, increased approximately 5.5 percent above comparable store sales for the six months ended February 29, 1992.
