FAMILY AIRLINES TO OFFER LOW-COST COAST TO COAST FARES

FAMILY AIRLINES TO OFFER LOW-COST COAST TO COAST FARES
NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles to New York for $249, round trip. Miami to New York for $149, round trip. Los Angeles to Las Vegas for $49, round trip. Those are examples of the fares to be offered by Family Airlines when the new carrier begins scheduled operation in January.
Family Airlines filed applications today with the Department of Transportation in Washington for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to operate as a scheduled airline. Applications were filed with the Federal Aviation Administration for an operating certificate in June.
Family Airlines will initially operated a fleet of up to five Boeing 747 aircraft in several of the nation's most heavily traveled markets. Unrestricted low fares will be made possible by high-density, all economy class seating, with as many as 550 seats per aircraft. The new carrier's business plan anticipates a fleet of ten aircraft by mid-1993 and as any as 30 aircraft by 1997.
"We believe the 747, in a high-density seating configuration, to be the most economically viable aircraft in the marketplace today," said Barry Michaels, Family Airline's chairman and CEO. "Our business plan envisions a break-even load factor of 55 percent. With our novel low fare structure, which we believe will expand the air travel market, we are forecasting average monthly load factors above 90 percent," Michaels added. Airline revenues would further be boosted through the bulk leasing of the 747's vast cargo space to air freight forwarders.
The Family Airlines concept is based on the economies of scale of the 747 and a simplified business plan to provide safe and reliable air travel at a low price. Inflight amenities will include a variety of complimentary soft drinks and other beverages. Family Airlines will also feature a number of entertaining and educational onboard activities designed for the younger traveler, including a geography program based on major landmarks visible during flight. A wide variety of seat-back video programs and video games, activated by credit card, are planned for the future. Inflight phone service is also planned for each aircraft. Meals will be optional. Discussions have been held with a major family restaurant chain to provide a limited "fast-food" menu, available at additional cost. No alcoholic beverages will be served.
"We've chosen the name Family Airlines," said Michaels, "because we believe there is a significant family travel market in this country that feels priced out of the marketplace by the traditional full-service airlines. Family travel can be a very broadening experience for children, as well as adults," Michaels said, "and it is our intention to make family travel available and affordable."
While much of the company's marketing focus will be on family travel, others are expected to find the Family Airlines concept attractive, including students, small business owners, seniors and others on a limited budget. The simplified fare structure will not require advance purchase, Saturday night stay-overs, or be limited by seat availabilities. "Our fares are our fares seven days a week, 365 days a year," said Michaels. "Every passenger on the same flight will have paid the same low fare."
Reservations and ticketing will be available exclusively through Family Airlines, either at airport locations or by mail through the carrier's Las Vegas reservations center. While tickets will not carry heavy restriction often placed by other carriers, "no-show" passengers holding tickets will not be able to re-book nor be eligible for a refund. However, open tickets may be purchased in advance, and in quantity, by passengers with indefinite travel dates. An open ticket will remain valid for one year form the date of purchase.
Family Airlines is currently in the process of recruiting and hiring approximately 850 employees for its initial operation, including many veteran employees of other major airlines. Initially, all flight crews will be former Pan Am B-747 airmen, fully versed in all aspects of the Pan Am Aircraft Operating Manual, on which the Family Airlines Flight Operating Plan will be based. Family Airlines is offering significant employment opportunities to residents of the Las Vegas area, where its corporate headquarters is located.
