FAMILIES TO LIVE AT MOUNTJOY SITE.
Byline: By BRIAN HUTTONMURDERERS, rapists and thieves in Ireland's most notorious prison are to make way for thousands of families, it emerged yesterday.
The crowded, rat-infested Mountjoy jail will be transformed into a "family friendly village", Justice Minister Michael McDowell said.
It will cater for several thousand residents in the heart of North inner city Dublin.
Work is to begin on the site in 2010, when the jail moves to a controversial new complex at Thornton Hall in North County Dublin.
Design team leader Shi-Fu Peng, of project architects Heneghan Peng, said the new village would re-engage with others surrounding it, the Royal Canal and may have a Metro stop.
He added that the regeneration would reverse the idea of the site as fortress while respecting its historical significance.
The minister promised the enterprise would not be a money-maximising exercise though the Government expects to make EUR200 million from the sale of the jail .
It will also get EUR300million for the Central Mental Hospital site in Dundrum which will also be relocated at at the 150-acre Thornton Hall.
