FAMED MERCEDES-BENZ ROADSTERS NOW FEATURE ADVANCED SOUND BY BOSE

FARMINGHAM, Mass., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The first automotive application of Bose Corporation's highly acclaimed Acoustimass(R) loudspeaker technology has been announced for the famed Mercedes-Benz two-seaters -- the SL coupe/roadsters, Bose Corporation said today.
Long the symbol for sports car luxury and driving sophistication, the three Mercedes-Benz SL models -- the SL320, SL500 and SL600 -- will be even more fun to drive in 1994 with the new state-of-the-art Bose music system. The new music system for the SL cars will be standard equipment in the United States and Japan, and an option for purchasers in Europe. Acoustically tailored Bose audio systems are also standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz S-class sedans and coupes, the company's top-of-the-line vehicle series.
Bose's proprietary Acoustimass speaker technology, employed with great success in home and professional audio products, produces a deep, pure bass sound with no audible distortion. Unlike conventional speakers that create sound through the motion of loudspeaker cones, the Acoustimass bass system launches sound via two air masses.
The Bose sound system for the 1994 Mercedes-Benz SL range, like all Bose automotive sound systems, is acoustically customized for this car model. Through sophisticated computer measurements Bose evaluates the interior dimensions, driver and passenger listening locations -- even the specific acoustic properties of the seat leather, carpeting and dashboard materials. Loudspeaker components are then located optimally, and the system is automatically equalized for the best possible sound quality.
"Bose and Mercedes-Benz have joined together to insure another outstanding music system," said Brandon Westley, general manager of the Bose OEM division. "As always, the Bose goal is music reproduction that approaches the realism of live performance. We believe the system is ideal for these technologically advanced, fun-to-drive SL vehicles and will enhance an already outstanding driving experience."
The Bose system features a new four-channel amplifier/equalizer with 200 watts of power (continuous) built into the specially designed Acoustimass module. The module itself contains a 5.25 inch woofer, and is positioned behind the drivers seat. Two 2.5 inch Twiddler(TM) drivers are mounted in infinite baffles above the package area and a tweeter and full range driver are located in both the driver and passenger doors, for a total of seven loudspeakers in the car. An Alpine AM/FM stereo cassette receiver completes the system configuration.
Bose pioneered the field of luxury OEM audio packages for automobiles and leads the industry in acoustically customized autosound systems. Bose speakers are also the best selling in the world. The company was founded by MIT professor Amar G. Bose in 1964.
