FAIR, ISAAC REPORTS GAIN IN SECOND QUARTER EARNINGS

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Fair, Isaac and Co. Inc. (NASDAQ: FICI), reported net income of $1,111,000 (18 cents per share) on revenues of $15.08 million for its second fiscal quarter ended March 31. This compares with earnings of $910,000 (15 cents per share) on revenues of $9.97 million in the same period a year ago.
For the first six months of its 1993 fiscal year, Fair, Isaac recorded net income of $2.33 million (38 cents per share), up 46 percent in comparison with the $1.60 million (27 cents per share) earned in last year's first half. Revenues of $28.4 million for the year to date showed a gain of 52 percent relative to last year's six-month tally of $18.7 million.
Figures for the latest three-month and six-month periods include the results of wholly owned DynaMark Inc., since its acquisition on Dec. 31, 1992. DynaMark, a Minneapolis-St. Paul based marketing services and database management company, contributed $2.52 million to consolidated second quarter and first half revenues. Excluding DynaMark's contribution, Fair, Isaac would have recorded revenue increases for those periods of 26 percent and 38 percent, respectively.
Fair, Isaac President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Rosenberger said, "The company's results for the quarter and year to date are very much in line with our internal forecasts and goals for the year. Bearing in mind that Fair, Isaac's revenue streams have always been somewhat seasonal and subject to quarterly ups and downs, our core credit risk management systems and services are close to where we expected them to be at mid-year. Revenues from DynaMark and our insurance risk management businesses are also pretty much on target." Rosenberger noted that Fair, Isaac's Insurance Division had achieved several breakthroughs in recent months including a contract to develop its statistically based underwriting decision control (USER) systems for a major U.S. auto and home insurance company and commencement of an insurance risk scoring service in partnership with Equifax Inc., one of the leading providers of data to insurance underwriters.
Rosenberger said Fair, Isaac had experienced some variances from its expense budget for the quarter. These were primarily related to higher than expected one-time costs in connection with the acquisition and integration of DynaMark, the decision to write off the balance of its equity investment in a small European credit card processor and foreign currency losses. Offsetting these negative variances were reductions in provisions for certain potential tax liabilities which had been established in prior periods. This reduced the company's effective tax rate for the second quarter from 41 percent a year ago to 30 percent in the quarter just ended.
Established in 1956, Fair, Isaac is a pioneer and world leader in the development of statistically based decision tools and systems. Its San Rafael, headquarters and branch offices in Delaware, Canada and Europe employ approximately 370 people. The company recently announced that it will open an office in Japan on May 12. DynaMark Inc., which provides marketing database and processing services, has about 135 employees at its Arden Hills, Minn., facility. Combined revenues for Fair, Isaac and DynaMark in the twelve months ended Sept. 30, 1992, were approximately $51 million.
