FAILURE GROUP CEO ROGER MCCARTHY APPOINTED TO COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE

 MENLO PARK, Calif., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Failure Group Inc. (NASDAQ: FAIL) announced that Dr. Roger L. McCarthy, P.E., chairman and chief executive officer of The Failure Group and Failure Analysis Associates Inc., has received a two-year appointment to the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science. The National Medal of Science is awarded by the President to individuals, who in the President's judgement, deserve special recognition for their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical or engineering sciences.
 "I am honored and delighted to have been selected to serve with my esteemed colleagues. The importance to the United States of continuing innovation in science and engineering cannot be overstated," said McCarthy.
 A native of Battle Creek, Mich., McCarthy earned an A.B. degree, with high distinction, in philosophy, and a B.S.E. in mechanical engineering, summa cum laude from the University of Michigan. McCarthy also holds three graduate degrees in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including an S.M. in mechanical engineering in 1973, a Mech. E. degree in mechanical engineering in 1975, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1977. His field of specialization is mechanical design. His scholastic honors and achievements include membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. At the University of Michigan, he was designated James B. Angell Scholar, selected as a National Science Foundation Fellow, and graduated the Outstanding Graduate in mechanical engineering in 1972.
 McCarthy joined Failure Analysis Associates in 1978. He became a vice president in 1980, president and chief executive officer in 1982 and chairman of the board in 1988.
 The Failure Group Inc., through its principal operating subsidiary, Failure Analysis Associates Inc., is the leading independent consulting firm devoted primarily to the investigation, analysis and prevention of failures of an engineering or scientific nature. Failure Analysis Associates was founded in 1967, and currently operates nine domestic and four international offices. The company's headquarters facility is located in Menlo Park.
