F5 Products Successfully Deliver IDS Load Balancing, Firewall Load

Balancing and CDN Deployment at the NETWORLD+INTEROP 2002 Exhibition

F5 Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq: FFIV) the leading provider of Internet traffic management (ITM) products announced today that F5 Networks technology played an critical role in supporting ShowNet at NETWORLD+INTEROP 2002 TOKYO.

ShowNet was the broadband network providing a smooth Internet access environment at NETWORLD+INTEROP. The network backbone was supported by a 10 Gigabit Ethernet in addition to an innovative dual-stack networking environment consisting of both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. F5 Networks successfully responded to the three major requirements of ShowNet, which included IDS load balancing, streaming CDN and firewall load balancing with its award-winning BIG-IP(R) local area traffic manager and 3-DNS(R) wide area traffic manager.

"Previously ShowNet had been focused on Layer 1-3 network configuration, however, this year, upper layer (L4-L7) network infrastructure was implemented for the Security Operation Center and Content Delivery Network's requirements," said Youki Kadobayashi, Ph.D., NETWORLD+INTEROP 2002 TOKYO Network Operation Center member, participating from the Graduate School of Information Science, Nara Institute of Science and Technology. "F5 products far exceeded my expectations in that they not only delivered key CDN infrastructure but also supported ShowNet topology in various aspects by responding to the needs of IDS load balancing and firewall load balancing."

"ShowNet is a broadband network providing smooth Internet access for exhibitors' booths as well as conference halls at the Interop tradeshow," said Takashi Sato, Senior Manager of Production and Operations at the Key3 Media Event. "Every year we provide reliable broadband access using state of the art technology and this year for the first time we were able to showcase F5's high availability traffic management products, BIG-IP and 3-DNS. Deploying firewall and IDS load balancing at the SOC (Security Operations Center) and demonstrating streaming CDN using 3-DNS, we were able to make a broad appeal to visitors and add value to the ShowNet."

In order to detect unlawful access at the ShowNet, IDS devices were installed at various points of the venue. A number of BIG-IP products were installed in front of these IDS devices and provided intelligent traffic management for more than ten IDS devices from various vendors.

The live streaming CDN at the ShowNet consisted of three BIG-IP products and two 3-DNS products. These solutions were deployed within three points across ShowNet, enabling access to streaming media from the closest and the best performing server. Moreover, the ShowNet network engineers easily completed the streaming CDN configuration in only 2 days, with little need for F5 support, thus proving the ease of use of F5 products.

For firewall load balancing the BIG-IP solution, deployed in a firewall sandwich configuration, efficiently load balanced NOKIA IP 530 firewalls, enhancing the performance and reliability of these devices. The BIG-IP solution not only load balanced the firewalls, but also simultaneously ensured that traffic was routed to the most efficient IDS device.
