F.W. WOOLWORTH CO. EXPANDS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HARPER GROUP

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- F.W. Woolworth Co. has awarded the Harper Group Inc. (NASDAQ: HARG) its NVOCC (non-vessel operating common carrier) business from Asia to the United States. Building on their successful partnership, which began in 1929, the NVOCC business will complement the wide array of services already provided by Harper, including air freight, ocean consolidation and transportation, electronic data interchange, customs brokerage and purchase order tracking.
"The Harper Group is always on top of things, always there. We can pick up the phone or send an electronic message, and they'll resolve any problem" said Dan Miller, F.W. Woolworth Co.'s import manager. "We can get everything from them. The mix is good -- brokerage, consolidation, NVOCC services -- a whole range."
F.W. Woolworth Co., part of the multinational retailer Woolworth Corp. (NYSE: Z), sources product from over 1,000 offshore vendors, most of them in the Far East. Rex Chan, director of imports for the retailer said, "Tracking shipments from over 1,000 vendors is no easy task. With the help of Harper's Purchase Order Follow-up program, we have complete control over our cargo. We can track orders using our own P.O. numbers, easing communication with our own Purchasing organization." With Harper's P.O. Follow-Up program, as soon as a vendor notifies Harper's Far East offices that cargo is ready, Harper sends a message that includes F.W. Woolworth's P.O. number, quantities by style, and the proposed shipping schedule. When the cargo leaves the Far East, Harper sends them a shipment recap. The recap includes a summary of merchandise shipped and the schedule (carrier, departure and arrival date), as well as copies of documents received from the vendor, forwarder's cargo receipts, and a load plan showing how cargo was loaded into the container. "These electronic messages pre-alerting us about ship dates, tonnage, etc., help our facilities prepare for shipments," added Miller.
Constant communication, along with Harper's expertise in a full range of transportation services, translates into the best routing for each shipment. Full container loads (FCL) of cargo are usually shipped by ocean on a prearranged schedule, especially during peak shipping seasons. "During our slower seasons, our merchandise is consolidated with other shipments at Harper's Far East facilities, providing us with frequent, cost-effective shipping alternatives," said John Neubauer, F.W. Woolworth Co. vice president of Transportation and Distribution. If cargo is needed sooner, Harper can also use its air freight expertise to expedite the shipment.
A leader in the industry since 1898, the Harper Group provides inventory and distribution management, materials requirement planning, protective cargo packing, bonded warehousing, foreign trade zone operations, marine insurance, freight forwarding and customs brokerage, supported by a range of information applications such as electronic data interchange (EDI). Major subsidiaries include Circle Airfreight Corp., Circle Freight International, Harper Robinson & Co., Sekin Transport International, Max Gruenhut International and Harper Freight International branches in 44 countries.
