Extras make their voices heard in new Paisley film.

The latest scenes for a Paisley-made film about the town's legendary MP William Gallacher have been shot at Beechwood Community Centre.

A call was put out for extras by film maker Alex Cathcart so that he could film a crowd scene in which politician Lloyd George was booed off a speaker's platform, with demands for Gallacher to take his place.

Alex said: "There were volunteer extras from PACE, West End Seniors Forum, students, and lots of folk from the local community of Shortroods.

"This included the whole committee that runs the centre.

"Councillor Jim Sharkey also attended.

"The audience took to their part as to the manner born. They shouted, booed and whistled, then chanted under my direction, 'we want Gallacher, we want the Paisley man', until the roof nearly came off.

"Finally, Lloyd George stomped off stage to the audience singing the Red Flag.

"Councillor Sharkey said that he has not had so much fun since his last council meeting.

"The original meet was held to allow Lloyd George a chance to tell the folk of the West of Scotland to behave themselves.

"The Mary Barbour rent strikes had only been a month previous, and the workers were upset because American labour had been imported with workers being paid twice as much as the local engineers."

Alex said that filming at the community centre came at the end of a long day's work.

"The afternoon before, we filmed Mr Gallacher being refused work by Ian McGregor of Johnstone Players, inside the factory of Direct Engineering in Old Sneddon," he said.

"Again, the workers in there joined in and had a change of routine which they loved."

William Gallacher, from Paisley, was Britain's first-ever Communist MP.

The film being made by Alex Cathcart has been filmed all over town.

Locations so far have included Paisley Abbey and the Bull Inn, in New Street.
