EXPORTING Growth Continues

Growth Continues. Year-end figures for Alaska exports compiled by the Alaska Center for International Business show a $500 million increase last year to $2.6 billion. The state's top exports, seafood and timber, grew 20 percent to $1.1 billion and $635 million, respectively. Another $500 million in Alaska seafood was exported through Seattle last year. Mineral exports grew 140 percent to $31.8 million, while petroleum product sales were up slightly from $411 million in 1988 to $415 million. Coal exports decreased 18 percent to $25 million.

Japan remained the largest consumer of Alaska exports, its purchases totaling $1.9 million, up from $1.5 million in 1988. Sales to Canada, Central and South America, and the Caribbean almost doubled, while exports to Asia and Europe climbed 24 and 28 percent, respectively.
