Export of Lychees to Europe in 2012/2013.

The new lychee season in Madagascar which started recently generates higher expectations for the 2012/2013 season exports.Towards the end of the year lychees will be available again in the fruit departments of the supermarkets. A large part of these lychees to Europe comes from Madagascar.

The association of lychee exporters in Madagascar expects that an estimated 17,000 tons of lychees will leave the country in the direction of Europe within few weeks. This is 14% more than in the 2011/2012 season.

The first supplies have arrived in Germany already and lychees are again found in the advertising leaflets of the supermarkets and the price on offer here in week 48 and 49 was about Euro 9.90/kg. In week 50 the price on offer was already clearly lower at Euro 6.90 to Euro 7.90/kg. It appears that lychees are not so popular with German household any more. The average quantity bought per household decreased by almost 73% between 2003 and 2011 here.
