Expo 2025 assessment mission to visit Azerbaijan in 2018.
An evaluation mission of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on the project to prepare Expo 2025 will visit Baku in the spring of 2018, Deputy Secretary General of the BIE Dimitri Kerkentzes said in a press conference in Baku on December 12.
Firstly, Kerkentzes thanked all those present for the warm welcome he had received in Baku and hospitality.
"Over the past two days, I have held several important meetings to familiarize myself with the preparations being conducted by Baku as a candidate city for the World Expo 2025. It was a great honor for me to meet with First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva. I also held talks with Finance Minister Samir Sharifov and Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov about the future of this project. This is very important, as it demonstrates that holding Expo is not just a local project for Baku, but it is a nationwide project for all of Azerbaijan," said Kerkentzes.
He noted that the parties continue to work together with the working group, the operational committee and the secretariat, which were created specifically for the project, to prepare the assessment mission of the International Bureau, which will be sent to Baku in March-April next year.
"The assessment mission is very important also for other candidate cities - Yekaterinburg, Paris and Osaka. This will allow us study the feasibility of the project in order to conduct a voting in November and select the city of Expo 2025. Azerbaijan has the opportunity to show us not only the significance of the project for the city and the country, but also to demonstrate the active involvement of citizens and especially young people in it. The youth has always played a very important role in the life of each Expo exhibition," said Kerkentzes.
He admitted that over the past two days, being in Baku, he was very interested in watching the work on the project.
"I look forward to the results of the work on the project in the next two months to see the result that will be presented to the evaluation mission next spring, the presentation of the project to 169 member countries of the BIE at the General Assembly and the way the government and people of Azerbaijan will convince the international community that Baku is the best place to hold Expo 2025," Kerkentzes said.
He noted that he was impressed by the support provided to the project at the highest governmental level.
Among the strong sides of Baku as a candidate, Kerkentzes singled out internationality, the experience of holding major global events and hosting large international delegations, and now the city that has chosen the main theme "The Future of Mankind" should prove why it is the best place for Expo.
