New horizons in environmental economics

Environmental and resource economist Gardner Brown's scholarly work could be characterized, suggest editors Halvorsen (economics, U. of Washington) and Layton (public affairs, U. of Washington), as consisting of three main areas: the conservation of biological resources; questions of resource modeling, growth, and environmental quality; and non-market valuation. They thus have organized the 12 papers collected here (originally presented at a conference in Gardner's honor, into three thematic sections reflecting those scholarly concerns. Specific topics include the bioeconomics of metapopulations, the optimal treatment of disease under a budget constraint, coordinating conservation on private lands, assessing whether the environmental Kuznets curve is an empirical reality, continuous versus discrete harvesting of fishes and trees, environmental valuation under dynamic consumer behavior, using Kuhn- Tucker conditions to value Montana sportfishing, and econometric analysis of stated preference ratings data.
