Experts Urge Smart Pet Selection During Dalmatian Mania PEDIGREE SELECTADOG Now Available on the Internet to Help Potential Pet Owners Choose Ideal Breed for Their Lifestyle

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- As thousands flock to see "101 Dalmatians," it's no doubt that kids everywhere will be hounding their parents for spotted pups. And, while they do make outstanding pets because they are intelligent and friendly lovers of regular companionship, experts remind us that Dalmatians have specific needs.

"Because of their large muscular frames and athletic bodies, Dalmatians need lots of regular exercise with room to run around and require substantial amounts of food," said Terry Stacy, national breeder service manager, PEDIGREE Food For Dogs. "So, if a Dalmatian fits the profile you're looking for, it could be the perfect addition to your family. If not, there are so many different dog breeds to choose from, that you will certainly be able to find one that will fit your lifestyle."

To help manage a Dalmatian dash and aid potential dog owners in choosing the most ideally suited puppy for their lifestyles, PEDIGREE Food For Dogs offers the free PEDIGREE SELECTADOG computerized breed selection service. Previously available at dog shows, through the mail and via telephone, PEDIGREE SELECTADOG is now available on the World Wide Web at the Waltham Website (http://www.waltham.com).

The PEDIGREE SELECTADOG program matches dog and potential owner by asking some basic questions such as family size, the size of his/her home, and the time he/she is willing to spend with a pet. The computer chooses two to four best matched breeds, and displays a visual presentation of the pets including videos or photos of each breed, detailed "personality" profiles and care and feeding information.

"At PEDIGREE we are committed to responsible dog ownership," said Stacy. "And, being a responsible pet owner begins with selecting a breed that will best fit your lifestyle so you and your pet can develop a meaningful, long- lasting relationship.

"We feel it's particularly important now with all the attention Dalmatians are receiving, that people are sensitized to the varying needs of different dog breeds. While Dalmatians do make wonderful pets, we want people to understand their needs. It's one more step towards reducing the number of pets that are returned to shelters each year," remarked Stacy.

In addition to accessing PEDIGREE SELECTADOG on the web, potential dog owners may request a questionnaire and use the service through the mail by writing P.0. Box 58853, Vernon, CA 90058-0853. Interested parties can also call 1-900-PUPPIES (1-900-787-7437) and respond to the questions to get breed recommendations for a fee of $1 per minute. Call length is about six minutes and the average call is $6.00. The call requires a touch-tone phone and callers must be 18 years or older.
