Funded by an EPSRC grant, this work reviews the primary in situ diagnostic techniques for analyzing polymer electrolyte fuel cell performance and describes a suite of techniques being used at Imperial College London to construct an experimental functional map of PEFC operation. The procedures measure electrolyte resistance, carbon monoxide distribution, current density, contact resistance between the gas diffusion layer and flow-field plates, and reactant flow in the channels of the flow-field plates.
