Expansion begins at Catamount Brewing

A welcome bit of economic good news was announced last week in the form of an expansion of facilities at the Catamount Brewing Co. The White River Junction, VT, producer of traditional British style ales will begin construction at its current site, a company spokesperson reported.

The brewery began sales in February, 1987, becoming the first microbrewery to brew and bottle beer in New England. Sales have since grown steadily and the brewery has been operating at maximum capacity for over year.

The expansion culminates a $400,000 financing effort, which has included VIDA (Vermont Industrial Development Authority), the Randolph Bank, and private equity from individual investors.

Construction activities will expand existing production areas, providing for increased production and savings in energy costs. The main focus will be an 800 square-foot conditioning cellar. Four 120-barrel vertical-cylndrical stainless steel tanks, fabricated by JV Northwest, Inc., of Portland, OR, providing greater fermentation and storage capacity.

Brewhouse changes will focus on improving the efficiency of the kettle boil. In addition, a new plate-and-frame wort cooler will be installed in order to provide faster wort cooling and more complete hot water recovery. The additional space and equipment will allow the brewery to increase its annual output from 6,000 barrels to 12,000 making Catamount one of the largest microbreweries in the country.

"We continue to be very excited about the potential for growth in microbreweries," said Catamount president and brewmaster Steve Mason. "There is a rising demand for locally-made, fresh beer which is only going to increase in the future. Catamount can now maintain its leadership roll in developing markets in the Northeast."
