Apr 10, 2010

Damascus, (SANA) -- Performance of the play Exit the King (Le Roi se meurt) by Eugene Ionesco began on Friday at al-Hamra Theater, directed by Kamil Abu Saab. The play features a number of psychologically-unstable characters, including King Berenger who is overwhelmed by delusions of his former might and his waning power, the tyrannical Queen Marguerite who represents fate and the new order that will replace the dying king and Queen Marie who is the opposite of Marguerite.Other characters include the domineering doctor, the feeble aging maid, and the King's guards, all of which suffer from moral duality that makes them cheer for the king when his health improves and decry him upon his death. The play will be performed until April 17.H. Sabbagh
