Exit door busy as Pards eyes more signings.

FOUR Toon players made use of the exit door at St James' Park yesterday as Alan Pardew cleared the decks ahead of his final push in the summer transfer window.

Jose Enrique's inevitable exit was the big news of the day, with United understood to have picked up a fee of just under pounds 6m for the Spaniard. His Spanish compatriot Xisco also joined him after securing a transfer back to Deportivo la Coruna, the club he joined the Magpies from in 2008.

Xisco had two years left on his contract and, while the fee was undisclosed, United have cleared a player earning around pounds 50,000 per week from their books.

Also on the move was James Tavernier who joined Carlisle on a month's loan.

And promising striker Phil Airey has joined SPL side Hibernian.

The Chronicle reported on June 28 how Hibs would pounce for the Amble lad after pre-season, with Colin Calderwood's side securing a six-month loan deal for the reserve-team hotshot.

Meanwhile, Alan Pardew has admitted reshaping his squad has been tough this summer.

He said: "If you are not one of the top clubs it is difficult to secure the players you want.

"Clubs at the top level make it difficult to adhere to the financial structure you want to adhere to.

"We think we have signed well in the summer.

"I look forward to seeing that group.

"But I think our fans will see new players on the pitch on Saturday that will impress. It is not complete, but by August 31 it will be."
