Exiled from main street; We love BEST TV.
THE PARADISE Sun BBC1 8pm
There's more intoxicating intrigue on the way as the period drama set in a Victorian department store returns for a second series. A year has passed since the events depicted in the first season, but if you thought that ambitious Denise and her beau John Moray had been living happily ever after since they kissed in last year's finale, you'd be very much mistaken.
In fact, they've hardly seen each other, because Moray has been exiled to Paris after being ostracised by Lord Glendenning, the powerful owner of The Paradise.
"The only contact Denise has had from Moray is letters and they've been incredibly infrequent," says Joanna Vanderham, who plays Denise. "She doesn't know where he is and her heart is breaking. She's been at The Paradise trying to keep it going, but the store is struggling and she feels hugely responsible. That's where we meet her, in a place of real need."
Then, when it looks as if The Paradise might be sold, Moray (Emun Elliott) comes back with plans to reinvigorate the ailing store. Naturally, Denise and Moray are delighted to be reunited, but they also have to deal with more meddling from Moray's ex-fiancee Katherine (Elaine Cassidy), who's now married to Tom Weston (Ben Daniels).
Does Joanna think there can be a future for Denise and Moray?
"Well, it doesn't seem to be going that way," she says. "Maybe it's that they can't live with each other but can't live without each other." New series
