Examining the effects of pestcentro on insects. (Senior Division).
Many advertisements in science magazines claim that ultrasonic sound waves would be a new way to get rid of pests in the house. There
were also reports on the Internet asserting that machines like
PestCentro could actually get rid of pests and keep them out, so a
decision was made to test the product. The important characteristics of
the machine were its range and its effectiveness. All experiments were
based more on qualitative observations than quantitative observations,
although an effort was made to make a controlled environment. For the
effectiveness of the machine, a blockade was made in the box used so
sound would be less likely to be heard in one area than in others.
Crickets were exposed to the sound. Observing the behavior of the
crickets before and after the machine was turned on showed that the
machine was not very effective. For the range experiment, the ultrasonic
sound machine was put a distance away thinking that only the straightest
sound waves would be able to get into the bottle where the crickets were
kept. However, this experiment also pointed towards the fact that the
product wasn't as effective as advertised.
