The ex-husband of an American schoolteacher who was killed at an Abu Dhabi mall has spoken of his grief in an emotional interview.

Paul Ryan said his children had been robbed of their mother after Ibolya Ryan was stabbed to death at Boutik Mall last week.

A suspect in the killing of the 47-year-old kindergarten teacher, who lived with her twin boys at Beach Towers 2 on Reem Island, is in custody after a dramatic raid on her home at the weekend.

Ryan, who also has a daughter with his ex-wife, flew from his home in Vienna, Austria upon hearing the news.

"Obviously I'm totally horrified by what happened", he said in an interview with CNN in Abu Dhabi. "One just needs to look at the video...the images of that bathroom, and it just knocks you out... it knocks you out.

"I still hope my children have not seen that."

Ryan was referring to a video released by Abu Dhabi Police that shows the aftermath of the killing in the mall toilets. Blood can be seen splattered around the washroom and a bloodied knife is pictured.

"Those beautiful children...[I need to] make sure that they get the comfort and the sense of their mother...[and] that I protect them as best I can," he said.

Asked by CNN's John Defterious if he thought his wife's killer operated alone or as part of a group,

Ryan said he believes the murder was carried out independently.

"There might be a cell involved, certainly, but after seeing the video of how she was captured and what was in her car, she had everything there all for herself, ready to go," he said.

"She didn't even care about the blood prints on her steering wheel. She could easily have done this all by herself."

Ryan said the UAE government had been supportive since the tragedy.

"They're treating me like family now," he said. "The children will have nothing to worry about for their education, for their entire education basically."

Ryan was also asked if he believes that the suspect should be given capital punishment if found guilty.

He said: "I can't believe I have the power to pardon. I don't even really want that responsibility. As far as I can tell so far, it seems pretty damning evidence, and she's confessed herself."

He said if the suspect is jailed, justice would be done.

Ryan added: "Ibolya, my dear ex wife -- and I do mean that -- will not have died in vain."

Ibolya Ryan's killer was caught by Abu Dhabi Police less than 48 hours after the murder. She has been identified as a 38-year-old UAE national of Yemeni origin.
