Ex-Meehan colt floors Kentucky Derby favourite.

Byline: Dan Farley

ACTION THIS DAY, favourite with Coral for the Kentucky Derby before his reappearance at Santa Anita on Sunday, was outpointed by a horse winning his first US race since leaving Brian Meehan, writes Dan Farley.

Master David, who ran three times for Meehan, had a length to spare over outsider Borrego in the Listed Sham Stakes over nine furlongs.

Sent off the 11-10 favourite over Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Action This Day, who was making his seasonal debut, Master David trailed pacesetter Gethsemani into the straight before getting on top in the final furlong.

Action This Day came from sixth to finish fourth, a head behind third-placed Preachinatthebar, who was the same distance adrift of Borrego.

Despite Coral pushing out Richard Mandella's horse to 16-1 from 10, the trainer said: "I'm happy with his start. He

finished strong.

"As long as he comes out in good shape, that's the main thing."

Thirsk winner Master David was second in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct in the autumn and then finished third in the Grade 2 Santa Catalina Stakes at Santa Anita last month.
