Ex-MILF fighters training as peacekeepers !-- -- Roel Pareao (The Philippine Star) - August 2, 2019 - 12:00am ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines More than 200 former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters started their training yesterday at Camp Lucero in Pikit, North Cotabato as they prepare to become members of Joint Peace and Security Teams (JPSTs). Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Carlito Galvez Jr.
said the training would allow former MILF fighters to join the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in maintaining peace and security in the Bangsamoro region. Galvez said 200 JPST units shall be established to secure residents in six government-identified MILF camps during the decommissioning process that will start on Sept.
6. Aside from former MILF fighters, the JPSTs will be composed of police and military personnel that will serve until the end of the term of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao interim government in 2022. Galvez said President Duterte would attend the launch of the decommissioning of MILF combatants.
Galvez said 30 percent or 12,000 MILF combatants and their weapons would be decommissioned this year. Another 35 percent will be decommissioned next year.
The remaining fighters will be decommissioned in 2022 in time for the signing of the exit agreement under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro. Jose Rodel Clapano
