Every 3rd person suffering from depression, anxiety.

LAHORE, October 09, 2009 (Balochistan Times): Depression and anxiety are the most commonly prevailing ailments in Pakistan as every third person is suffering from these disorders. I.A.K.Tareen President, Mental Health Federation of Pakistan (MHFP) said this while talking to reporter in connection with World Mental Health Day observed on October 10. He said that uncertainty, poverty, price-hike, unemployment and family feuds are the main causes of psychiatric diseases which affect behaviour pattern of people. He said that prevailing circumstances have a direct bearing on the behaviour of the people so much so that the affectees could attempt suicide, patricide, matricide, fratricide and uxoricide,adding that such incidents are increasing. Quoting WHO reports, Dr. Tareen said that depression would be the most prevalent disease in the world by 2020. However, he ruled out the study conducted on mental health in Gujjar Khan, Rawalpindi in which it was said that 66 percent of rural women are suffering from depression in Pakistan. He also disagreed that Pakistan ranks first among the countries of the world with high rate of depression. Regarding prevention and cure of the psychiatric diseases, Dr. Tareen said that we should follow the teachings of Islam and inculcate in the minds of children that they should always speak truth as telling a lie is also one of the causes of psychiatric diseases. People think of mental diseases as a stigma and they dont prefer getting treated for such diseases. However, medical research has discovered new drugs and improved therapies to treat the disorders. A patient can lead a normal life due to timely treatment, he explained. To a question, he said that Mental Health Federation has been taking measures to create awareness about successful treatment of psychiatric diseases and for this purpose seminars, symposia and workshops are organized in the country.
