European diaper update.

Delivery of Procter & Gamble's "Pampers Phases" products started in the U.K. last December, reports NONWOVENS INDUSTRY European correspondent Clare Haddad. The product range is the same as sold in North America, with four stages and 11 pack configurations in all. Stores, however, are choosing not to stock all sizes due to shelf space limitations.

The number two player in the European diaper market, Peaudouce, is replacing its "Ultra T Shape" product, introduced in February 1991, with a phases type product. The new "Step by Step" branded diaper started delivery last month; there is a 5 million [pounds] budget for the launch in the U.K. New design features on the diaper include anti-leak leg cuffs.

Peaudouce's market share has dropped drastically through the last two years; last October it had just 5% of the U.K. market, while Pampers had 61.7%.

Meanwhile, Kimberly-Clark, Dallas, TX, has announced plans to build a facility in Barton-on-Humber, U.K. While there is speculation that this will be a baby diaper plant, K-C's first in the U.K., the company has made no official comment pending approval by local authorities. The facility represents a 100 million [pounds] investment for the U.S. diaper manufacturer; there is also speculation that two other K-C plants will be built, probably in Belgium and Germany.
