European Union, member states pledge 220 million Euros for flood affectees: European Union Commissioner.
ISLAMABAD, August 24, 2010 (Frontier Star): The European Union
Commissioner for Humanitarian Assistance, Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, has
said that the European Union and the member states have pledged 220
million Euros for the flood assistance. Kristalina Georgieva who is on a
visit to Pakistan, held a meeting with Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah
Mahmood Qureshi Tuesday. The Foreign Minister briefed the Commissioner
about the unprecedented devastation caused by the floods and the massive
relief operation that was underway in the affected areas. The Foreign
Minister also briefed the Commissioner on the outcome of the UNGA Special Plenary and the international relief assistance being given to
Pakistan. Commissioner Georgieva on her part expressed sympathy with the
affected people underlining that the European Union was prompt in
allocating humanitarian assistance and sending relief teams to Pakistan.
She said that the European Union and the member states have pledged 220
million Euros for the flood assistance. She said that the European
Commission was closely working with the World Bank and the Asian
Development Bank in meeting the huge challenge caused by the floods. The
Commissioner also underlined the European Unions resolve to work closely
with the Government of Pakistan within the framework of the FODP for the
long-term socio-economic development of the country. She said that the
European Union was keenly looking forward to the next FODP Ministerial
Meeting to be held in Brussels on 15 October 2010.
