European Parliament asks Davutoy-lu to prevent authoritarian slide.
ySTANBUL (CyHAN)- In a strongly worded letter, the European Parliament has asked Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoy-lu to "immediately intervene" to stop Turkey's slide into authoritarianism.
In a similar move, Rebecca Harms, the co-chair of the Greens group in the European Parliament, has inquired about the situation of Dr. Hatice Euzcelik, who was sacked from Bezmialem University's teaching hospital after her husband, Judge Metin Euzcelik, was arrested. Without mincing her words, Harms made it clear how worried she was and called on Davutoy-lu to react. "I urge you to intervene to immediately stop this backslide into an authoritarian non-democratic system and to re-establish the rule of law in the Republic of Turkey," she said. Harms has on more than one occasion voiced her concern with recent developments in Turkey.
Calling the arrest of Judges Metin Euzcelik and Mustafa BaE-er, who ruled for the release of Samanyolu Broadcasting Group Chairman Hidayet Karaca and 63 police officers, "unlawful," Harms said she was following the political interference in the judiciary and the violations of press freedom with "great concern."
Today's Zaman obtained the following letter from Harms:
Honorable Prime Minister
Dear Mr. Davutoy-lu,
It is with growing despair that I am contacting you due to the current situation and developments in your country.
We have met several times personally during the last legislative period and we have been fighting together for a democratic Turkey in the EU.
I have been closely following the last events in Turkey and the growing number of political interventions in the judiciary as well as the continuous violation of press freedom fill me with great concern.
With great worries I have heard about the recent arrests of Judge Euzcelik and Judge Mustafa BaE-er. The fact that investigators from the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors requested the arrest of the judges without even hearing their defense statements is unlawful. According to my information Hatice Euzcelik, the spouse of Metin Euzcelik, who is one of the two judges who ruled for the release Samanyolu Broadcasting Group CEO Hidayet Karaca and 63 police officers, was laid off by Bezm-i Alem University Hospital without any excuse and again without even hearing her defence statement.
I urge you to intervene to immediately stop this backslide into an authoritarian non-democratic system and to re-establish the rule of law in the Republic of Turkey.
