The European Central Bank has announced plans to test six Bulgarian banks.

According to Reuters, the apex bank is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of six Bulgarian banks as part of allowing the nation to join the European Union's banking union.

In July, Bulgaria, which joined the EU in 2007, applied to join the banking union.

The ECB had said that commercial banks in the nation need tougher supervision.
