The European Commission has announced plans to invest 19.4 million [European Dollar] ($17.2 million at $1 = 1.13 [European Dollar]) in bioinformatics over the next three years. The funds will be distributed among 25 organizations in 11 nations, including France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands and Switzerland. The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in the UK will receive the largest portion of the funds at 12.9 million [pounds sterling] ($11.4 million). The EBI plans to use the funds to support four new bioinformatics projects. The first project, Development and Establishing of Standards and Prototype Repository for DNA-Array Data, aims to develop array data standards, create a pubic database for array data, and develop software to interpret the data. The second project, European Macromolecular Structure Database, will collect, organize and disseminate information relating to macromolecule structures. Enhancing access to protein-protein interaction data by defining a standard data representation and implementing a public repository, termed IntAct, is the third project. IntAct will attempt to integrate various protein interaction databases into one standard database. The last project, Integr8, will combine the other three projects with other information sources like SWISS-PROT and TrEMBL to provide a seamless system research.
