Eur 200 mn to be invested in irrigation.

From 2015 to 2025, the Macedonian Government is going to invest more than 200 million euros in the expansion and reconstruction of the extant facilities and in the construction of new facilities of the irrigation system. The action plan prepared by the government committee for irrigation foresees annual allocations of 18 million euros in the first few years, which would later increase.

"Many aspects of agriculture have improved. A lot of problems have been resolved. However, irrigation has remained one of our gravest sores bearing in mind the climate change and the dilapidation of our irrigation systems," Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said.

The document has been drafted in cooperation with water supply companies, beneficiaries of state-owned farmland, farmers having sizable farming areas, and experts from Turkey, Israel and Croatia. It will be adopted by September at the latest after all suggestions and remarks are previously analyzed.

Aside from making investments in the irrigation system, reforming the management of the irrigation system has also been planned. The President of the Farmers' Federation, Veljo Tantarov, hopes that with the new document, all irrigational-related problems will be overcome.
