Eugene trio helps out some friends in need.
It's payback time for Trio Pacifica - time to do something for the Oregon Mozart Players, who have done so much for the trio. Time to do something special. Which is why the esteemed Eugene piano trio will donate its services to the chamber orchestra in a bonus concert on Saturday.
``Live music is a human, gregarious, positive thing,' says violinist Kathryn Lucktenberg. `It's part of any musician's mission to promote the artistic health of the community she or he lives in.
`Musicians are used to helping each other out.'
And the Oregon Mozart Players can use the help. While the orchestra has knocked down its debt during the past year to a more manageable level, it still has about $75,000 to go. With attendance and donations up, officials believe the orchestra is definitely recovering from a serious financial situation.
``The arts are underfunded in our society. It's not an easy life,' Lucktenberg says.
Trio Pacifica was formed in the fall of 1993. Its members are all on the faculty of the University of Oregon School of Music, and the group has a long association with the Oregon Mozart Players.
`Last year, when our trio played Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Oregon Mozart Players, the orchestra was in bad financial straits,' pianist Victor Steinhardt says. `Rather than reduce our contractually agreed fee for that concert, and wanting to plan to play together again as a trio, we offered this additional concert to them as a way to raise much needed funds.'
Says cellist Stephen Pologe, ``The orchestra and the individual players are our friends. We're not able to contribute a substantial and generous sum to the Oregon Mozart Players, but we're able to perform, and if that can bring in funds for the organization, we will be thrilled.''
