Ethnic hair care shoppers embrace salon-style products.

NEW YORK -- Salon-style hair care formulas are increasingly popular with ethnic beauty consumers.

McBride Research Laboratories' Design Essentials line, which began as a salon-only brand, responded to the resurgence of natural textured hair in the African-American community by creating the Design Essentials Natural line two years ago, offering a wide variety of products for curly-haired styles.

Currently available in Walgreens, Walmart and other leading mass retailers, the line is registering double-digit gains, notes a spokeswoman, who adds that Design Essentials also offers such other salon-quality items as Herbal Complex 4 Hair & Scalp Treatment, Stimulations Super Moisturizing Conditioner and Nutriment Rx Pea Sprout Creme Hairdress.

Stephan Co., meanwhile, has targeted Latina shoppers with its Imagen Salon Formula line of six salon-quality items. One item, Moisturizing Shampoo, incorporates avocado oil and botanicals to naturally revive dry, damaged hair, while Strengthening Conditioner is formulated to penetrate the hair shaft instantly, to detangle and smooth even problem hair.
