Establishment of Ripening Centers necessary for mango export: FPCCI.

PESHAWAR -- Chairman, Regional Standing Committee on Horticulture Exports, FPCCI, Ahmad Jawad, has called for establishing Ripening Centres for boosting mango export.

If Ripening Centres are established with proper treatment facilities, the price of our mangoes in the world market would be doubled, besides increase in the volume of mango export, he said while chairing a meeting of the standing committee.

There is a huge difference between our mango production and its export. We could easily enhance the export up to 0.3 million tons, if the required infrastructure and ripening centres are established, he stated.

Jawad urged the government to pay due attention to the country's horticulture export and offer incentives under public-private partnership basis in the coming budget.

He said that Pakistani mangoes were naturally blessed with a Brix level of 18 to 22, which was ideal for any buyer and not available in any other country. However, he added that to maintain the uniformity of the Brix level in every mango carton, proper ripening centres were needed.

In high value markets, buyers prefer uniformity of Brix level in each consignment, he said.

He said that the country produced more than two million tons of mangoes annually, but its exports were not more than 0.1 million tons.

Last season, Thailand mangoes fetched 49.50 dirham per kg in Dubai against 13.5 dirham per kg of Pakistani mangoes, despite the fact that Pakistani mangoes were best in taste and aroma, he stated.

Explaining the reason, Jawad said that Thailand had built a modern infrastructure for processing of mangoes, ripening centres for the uniformity of Brix level and had adopted good agriculture practices.

He said Pakistan need to establish required infrastructure to boost the mango exports.
