Esprit's ProQuin XR 'a step forward'.

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Esprit Pharma's ProQuin XR, a new prolonged-release quino-lone, promises to combine the proven efficacy of ciprofloxacin with improved tolerability in the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

While nausea and diarrhea are side effects of traditional ciprofloxacin, more than 99% of patients treated in a trial with ProQuin XR did not experience either symptom.

Billed as "tough on the infection, gentle on the GI tract," Pro-Quin XR (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride) provides a steady release of ciprofloxacin unlike other oral formulations. Once-daily 500-mg ProQuin XR is not a generic drug.

Because of its unique delivery system it is under patent until 2016. It is not AB rated or interchangeable with other ciprofloxacin extended-release (Cipro XR) or immediate-release (Cipro) oral formulations.

ProQuin XR, which does not interact with Prilosec, must be taken with the main meal of the day to take full advantage of the natural physiology of the GI tract in the fed state. Because of its unique formulation, it is retained in the stomach longer than Cipro or Cipro XR, says an Esprit spokesman.

Instead of releasing all of its ciprofloxacin within two hours, it steadily delivers ciprofloxacin to the area of the GI tract with the highest absorptive capacity. It releases ciprofloxacin over six hours, three to four times longer than Cipro XR and 24 times longer than Cipro, he adds.

ProQuin XR "is a step forward in quinolone treatment," he says. "The reduction of nausea and diarrhea establishes a new safety standard."

ProQuin XR is available in 50-count bottles (NDC: 13913 001-50) and 3-count blister packs (NDC: 15456-001-03). Pharmacy ordering information is available by e-mailing For more information, please visit
