Erudite Tories; PEOPLE: WESTGATE WITH THE TORIES.

Byline: Westgate

WHAT an erudite bunch the Welsh Tories are - their lunchtime fringe on Monday was awash with literary quotes and historical references.

Assembly group leader and ex-academic Nick Bourne started the trend by drawing on the words of American journalist and novelist Mark Twain before - rather surprisingly - turning to revolutionary roundhead Oliver Cromwell for inspiration.

Continuing in a similar vein was group health spokesman David Melding. Not wanting to be the odd one out, William Graham managed to get a quote from the theologian St Thomas Aquinas when answering one member's questions on the state of local government. Impressive stuff - apart from the fact that even William can't recall whether St Thomas actually ever uttered the words he'd attributed to him.
