This statement confuses the two separate eruptions of the Taupo Volcanic Zone:
(1) the 1886 eruption of Mt. Tarawera (in the vicinity of Lake Rotorua), that ejected about 2 [km.sup.3] of debris (White et al. 1997) in "only 4 hr" (Cole 1970), and
(2) the 200 BC eruption of a vent or vents now submerged beneath Lake Taupo which ejected 30 to 100 [km.sup.3] (Houghton et al. 1995) of debris and lasted between several days and several weeks (Wilson and Walker 1985).
