Eritrea : Ministry opens cadastre office in Keren city.

The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment opened cadastre office in Keren city with a view to introducing land-plot-based effective information system.

Speaking at a meeting conducted in this regard, Mr. Habtemichael Woldegiorgis, director of the cadastral department in the Ministry, stated that a complete data as regards residential land plots is a timely prerequisite, and called on residence owners to register their houses soon. Indicating that residential houses that should be registered should be those built on the basis of master plan and proper process of survey, as well as evidence of land tenure, he went on to say that registration of sold residential houses should also involve legal proof of sale.

Mr. Habtemichael further pointed out that construction of residential houses in line with master plan facilitates accessibility of water and electricity supplies, as well as telephone lines, and that the Eritrean land proclamation advocates cadastral registration. Land is not for sale, but ownership of houses could be transferred through proving its legality, he added.

The Ministry of Land Water and Environment s cadastral department explained that houses with documents recognized by the Housing Commission can be registered, and that those located outside master plan surveys can be assessed.

Stating that the Keren Municipal Administration has already started facilitating cadastral registration of residential houses, Mr. Tekie Keleta, Mayor of the city, pointed out that master plan is ready for the areas of Adi-Shibot and Megareh.

The participants of the meeting put forth views on various issues.
