Erin shines in writers' competition.

A SCHOOLGIRL from Newcastle has been named as the runner-up in a national young writers' competition.

Erin Mason, 10, from Throckley School, shone in the Explore Learning's National Young Writers' Award contest with her story about two young girls' adventures and struggles to survive a journey from Antarctica.

The task was to write a 500-word story with the theme 'around the world'.

The competition, now in its fifth year, was judged by best-selling author of the How to train your Dragon series, Cressida Cowell and attracted over 15,000 entrants.

Cressida said: "It is tremendously exciting that we have so many creative young people in this country."
