Erdoy-an says Nokta to 'pay the price' for cover featuring his mock-up selfie.
ySTANBUL (CyHAN)- President Recep Tayyip Erdoy-an has said the Nokta newsweekly magazine will pay the price for its latest edition featuring a mock picture of him taking a selfie with the flag-draped coffin of a soldier in the background.
"This cannot be called freedom of the press. I never took a selfie in my life. Some can do that. First of all, I am not an undignified person to turn my back to a coffin of a martyr. But those who made this cover are undignified and despicable. They know my character very well and that's why I will do whatever should be done. They will pay the price for this," Erdoy-an said on Wednesday night
His statements come few days after police have raided the magazine on accusations of "propagating terror" and "insulting Erdoy-an" through its latest edition depicting a smiling Erdoy-an taking a selfie with the flag-draped coffin of a soldier in the background, causing concerns over freedom of the press.
The cover depicted a grinning Erdoy-an in shirtsleeves taking a selfie in front of a coffin draped in the red Turkish flag. The image was a clear reference to the escalating violence between the security forces and Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists that have killed more than 100 security personnel in past weeks. It was also an implicit criticism of comments Erdoy-an has made on military deaths.
Nokta Managing Editor Murat Ecapan was detained on Monday in the raid by the ystanbul Police Department's counterterrorism unit and referred to the court for arrest. He was released later in the day. (Cihan/Today's Zaman) CyHAN
