Equestrian: SPORT SHORTS - French takes lead.

LATE entry Piggy French took a slender dressage lead on What A Performance at the start of the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials.

French, a team gold medallist for Britain at the 2001 European Young Rider Championships, was only accepted for the event on Sunday.

William Fox-Pitt, the Burghley winner on Tamarillo, went into second on Kaleidoscope and rides his more experienced Bramham winner Navigator tomorrow.

Cumbrian Ruth Edge and Mr Dumbledore finished in third place after being badly upset during their test by a continuous loudspeaker commentary.
