Envisioning Information.

ENVISIONING INFORMATION. Edward R. Tufte. Cheshire, Connecticut: Graphics Press, 1990. Illustrated, 196 pp., hardbound, $48.00 postage-paid.

An extraordinary book that translates our information-rich, three-dimensional world onto paper in more ways than may be readily imagined. The author, a graphic designer who teaches at Yale, reveals design strategies for enhancing the dimensionality and complexity of information design through varied images that include drawings by Calder and Klee, computer visualizations, the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, dance movement notations, weather charts and other fascinating images. Mr. Tufte considers "envisioning information" as "to work at the intersection of image, word, number, art," where careful study repays the viewer in both aesthetic and cognitive enrichment. This book should become a landmark in the area of graphic design and is recommended for all serious students of the field.
