Environment and efficiency ... slip sheets make the distribution packaging connection.

Cynthia D. Holloway Marketing Manager Lydall Southern Products

Less is more. With today's focus on reducing, recycling and conserving, slip sheets offer solutions to many of the dilemmas faced by food processors and distributors. Slip sheets require minimal storage space, less solid waste disposal, less tag-along freight expense, and a price that improves profits at the bottom line. Slip sheets deliver more as the efficient, cost effective replacement for wooden pallets. Today there are two primary distribution packaging challenges:

* Shippers are looking for innovative ways to reduce cost and

* Receivers are searching for ways to reduce trash disposal costs.

The effectiveness of slip sheets in meeting both challenges is reflected in the growing interest for both domestic and international shipping in a wide range of industries.

At a fraction of the cost of wooden pallets, the low price of slip sheets is one of the most important benefits to shippers. Slip sheets eliminate the need for administering pallet exchange programs and the consistent comment that good pallets are often exchanged for damaged or poor quality pallets. Slip sheet users reduce overall freight cost by increasing product payload through improved cube utilization and by eliminating the tag-along cost of shipping heavy pallets. In addition, solid fibre slip sheets require less valuable storage space than pallets. In fact, a hundred slip sheets can be stored in the space taken by one wooden pallet.

Additional benefits to receivers of slip sheeted loads have evolved during the past few years due to growing environmental concerns. According to Material Handling Engineering's 1991 figures there are 1.7 billion pallets produced annually. The resulting volume of worn and damaged pallets make up a significant portion of the solid waste stream. This makes the United States' responsibility to provide a solution more evident as we generate 40% of the solid waste produced worldwide.

The shortage of landfill space in many areas has pushed the cost of trash disposal to $150 per ton. Overall disposal costs will add a minimum of $2.00 per pallet to the cost of each wooden skid. Landfill costs are justly receiving more attention and reducing solid waste will yield immediate savings.

LY-PAK solid fibre slip sheets, manufactured by Lydall, Inc. are produced from laminated virgin kraft linerboard and therefore easily recyclable. Kraft fibreboard slip sheets can be combined with other kraft waste so that it is possible for even small users to accumulate sufficient quantities to make recycling practical. One hundred percent virgin kraft waste becomes an asset instead of a liability as it can be re-sold at a high waste value. Solid fibre slip sheets are recyclable within existing systems at facilities now in place throughout the U.S. and offshore. The railroads offer recyclers and consolidators special rail rates and railcars specifically designed to transport waste paper directly to mills for repulping.

The food and beverage industries are the major users of slip sheets. Frozen foods as well as dry products are successfully shipped on slip sheets. However, the use of slip sheets has expanded to include almost every product group including chemicals, pharmaceutical, electronic, cosmetics, printed material, furniture, apparel and building material.

Slip sheets were first adopted by many food processors in the 1970's with continuing growth during the past 20 years. Renewed interest has created even further growth in the 1990's as more companies become committed to environmentally sound packaging designs. Lydall, Inc./Southern Products was one of the forerunners in developing the solid fibre slip sheets that are used extensively today in modern distribution systems. LY-PAK slip sheets are custom made to the individual users' specifications so that the distribution cycle requirements of each manufacturer are met.

Slip sheets are a logical distribution packaging solution to the environmental dilemmas of the 1990's and beyond. Resources used in packaging must be renewable and easily recyclable with existing technologies. LY-PAK solid fibre slip sheets meet these demands and offer an environmentally and economically sound alternative to traditional methods of material handling.
