Enterprise Solutions Limited announces major new deployment of EXM Messaging Products at Wal-Mart; EXM/DMTA X.400-compliant message transfer agents and EXM/DSA X.500 directory system agents installed at over 2,100 Wal-Mart Stores.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 1995-- Enterprise Solutions Limited (ESL), with headquarters in Westlake Village, Calif., Tuesday announced the roll-out of EXM/DMTAs and EXM/DSAs to each of Wal-Mart's approximately 2,100 stores.

ESL previously provided Wal-Mart with the Enterprise Xtended Mail character-based X.400-compliant Simple User Agent (EXM/SUA), deployed because of its ease of use and because very little training is required.

The installation of the Message Transfer Agents and Directory System Agents at each store along with the Simple User Agents enables Wal-Mart to send mail and information from store to store and from store to the Home Office.

Wal-Mart needed a system that could reliably move, manage, and control e-mail and information transmissions between its more than 2,100 stores, 3,700 suppliers and its corporate offices worldwide. ESL helped provide the solution: EXM Mail offers security, scalability, directory services, automated administration, X.400 and X.500 standards-conformance, plus availability across a wide range of client and server hardware choices.

The EXM/DSA, or Directory System Agent, resides on each server and is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and searching of mail addresses across the mail network. Using the 1988 and 1993 X.500 model, the Directory can handle a wide variety of information in addition to X.400 mail addresses and distribution lists. Wal-Mart uses three levels of the directory in order to accommodate the magnitude of directory entries. Each Wal-Mart store maintains its own Directory, along with a Message Transfer Agent.

The EXM/DMTAs, or Departmental Message Transfer Agents, provide reliable message transfer services between multiple servers as well as to compatible user agents, via automatic routing and tracking. The EXM/DMTA at each Wal-Mart store sends messages directly within the store, to another store, or to the Home Office. By performing an automatic directory lookup each time it submits a message, it allows the message to be sent without addressing errors.

Wal-Mart has also deployed two main clients from ESL: The Simple User Agent and the Departmental Distribution List Manager (DDLM). Both of these clients are Unix character-based, which are easy to use and require almost no training. The EXM/SUA has currently been ported to UnixWare, AT&T Unix V.4 and HP platforms. The DDLM program allows users to create distribution lists within their stores. It is also a simple application, requiring virtually no training.
