Enjoyable adaptation of a Shakespeare classic...
Once again, Shakespeare 4 Kidz has managed to put on a wonderful musical adaptation of one of the Bard's greatest plays.
Adapted by writing duo Julian Chenery and Matt Gimblett (who also adapted the unrivalled production of The Tempest which visited Bahrain last year), it weaves dark comedy and knock knock jokes, songs and dance numbers.
It tells the story of Macbeth, a noble Scottish warrior who happens upon three witches who tell him a prophecy.
They tell him he will soon be Thane of Cawdor - and soon after that, King.
Disquieted by this revelation, he informs his wife, who decides they should force the choice by murdering the King.
It stars Noel Andrew Harron as Macbeth and Michelle Cornelius as Lady Macbeth, with Isc Stanmore as Macduff and James Yeoburn as Banquo.
The Scottish play is not known for its light-hearted tone, so the brief interludes with a funny, dancing porter (Hywel Dowsell) and choreographed dance routines (by Helen Jeckells and Mark Hedges) helped pierce the tone.
There's a certain spark missing from parts of the performance compared to last year, which was possibly one of the best things I've seen on a stage.
However, it is still a wonderful play for the entire family to enjoy - it is not simply aimed at children.
The themes and the crux of the play are all very much still there, but it boasts the added joy of the unknown songs and a fresh take on a play that many will have read or seen countless times.
I encourage parents to take their children to this world-class performance, which rivals most West End productions.
S4K's Macbeth is being presented in Bahrain by Entertainment+.
The final performances will take place today at 9am and 6pm.
