England drove us over limit.

ENGLAND'S dire World Cup performances drove the nation to drink.

A Europe-wide survey has revealed a higher proportion of motorists were caught drink-driving here during the tournament than in any other country.

Almost 600,000 drivers were tested in the biggest ever summer blitz across 19 countries, with 13,000 positive.

The highest proportion of motorists exceeding the alcohol limit was in the UK where 10,496 drivers were tested, with 916 proving positive (8.8per cent).

But only two motorists were found drink-driving in the whole of Germany during the operation, code named AD606 (Alcohol/Drugs June 2006).

Poland had the worst figures for breaking the speed limit (5.77per cent).
