SLT has grown at a remarkably rapid rate since its inception. And recently the company moved from its 2,000sqft base to a 10,000sqft unit in Plessey Road, Blyth, Northumberland. The move heralds the next phase of SLT's growth and Ernie Craig's mission now is to expand the company's customer base and bring in more work from a variety of sectors, including the aerospace and defence industries.
SLT's core offering is sub-contract precision machining and CNC programming services to a diverse range of industries including aerospace and defence, automotive, hydraulics, sub-sea, medical and food sectors.
In addition, the company offers sub-contract CNC off-line programming and on receipt of a Cad model can produce complete ISO machining programmes for clients to use on their in-house machining centres. SLT manages the project to produce the component and create tooling lists, set-up sheets and operator instructions. Ernie says: "We are firmly committed to meeting and exceeding all of our customers' expectations.
"We offer a rapid response to customers for small-batch production work, delivered in the shortest possible lead time, and our prices are among the most competitive in the industry.
"Although price is important, customers are more concerned with getting value for money and I firmly believe that this is what we offer." To achieve results on a consistent basis, a company has to have a high-quality workforce and an excellent business model.
SLT is fortunate in having both of these and an unwavering commitment to quality is perhaps the primary reason for the company's success.
Ernie says: "We are an ISO 9001:2000-registered company and we invest a significant amount of time and resources in staff training and development.
"We have gained the Investors in People accreditation and our highly-skilled and committed workforce is dedicated to achieving excellence in all we do." SLT has benefited from the support of Northern Defence Industries, of which it is a member, as well as Blyth Valley Council, Business Link Northumberland and HSBC Bank.
Ernie concludes: "We have managed to tap into a variety of business support mechanisms and it's important that small businesses realise that help is available to them."
The message, then, is clear: if SLT can do it, why not others?
