Enemy at the Gates (Film4, 9pm); Tonight's TV.

Byline: Jade Wright

POLITICAL officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) makes soldier Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) the face of Russia's battle against the Nazis.

When the Germans send marksman Major Konig (Ed Harris) to kill the hero, the pair engage in a taut battle of cunning.

It's an epic war movie focusing on the Battle of Stalingrad that favours spectacle over emotion. This pounds 60m film initially explodes with the bloody battle, but the rest pales next to such intensity. Law struggles, Fiennes is unconvincing but Harris lends some weight. The battle scenes are memorable and most of the characters in the film are based on real people. Back in 2001, it was estimated that this was the most expensive British movie ever made.
