Encyclopedia of Artists.

Encyclopedia of Artists. William Vaughn, editor. New York, NY: Oxford University Press (800-445-9714), 2001. Illus., hardcover, 96 pp. each book, $180.

This is a comprehensive, richly illustrated six-volume introduction to Western art and artists written primarily for young people, grades five through high school. Each volume presents an illustrated biography of approximately 45 significant Western artists, 223 in total. A large color reproduction accompanies each artist's biography, along with reasonably in-depth biographical information. Each volume explains how to use the encyclopedia and contains a timeline of artistic styles and movements. The first five volumes of this set are composed of the artists' biographies. The final book in the set, volume 6, is a fully illustrated reference resource with brief chapters on the principal artistic styles and movements throughout the past 700 years. This would be a valuable resource for school libraries and/or artrooms.
