ENCOUNTERS. Access Network, Media Resource Centre, 295 Midpark Way SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2X 2A8, Canada. VHS, Beta, and 3/4" formats, ten 30-minute tapes with teacher's guide.

Encounters is a television series on art and art curriculum for upper elementary students. Each program in the series consists of three separate but related modules in seeing, discovering and doing. The Encounter module is a fast-paced visual essay, somewhat like a rock video. It introduces viewers to the program's theme. The Explore module slows down the pace and encourages viewers to look at their world and the world of art. This module demonstrates how art and sources of ideas for art can be found in the natural and built environment and in art itself. The Express module aims to motivate viewers to create their own artworks as well as to respond to art based on the ideas presented in the other modules. Here the artist-teacher synthesizes reasons for creating art, subject matter and themes, media, tools, techniques and visual design in demonstrations including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, fabric arts, photography and mixed media.

This series is very flexible, with each program being a complete self-contained unit. Each module within a program may also be used alone or in various combinations and sequences. The content of the series is suggested by program titles such as Defining, Capturing and Clarifying; Details and Data, Textures and Touches; Colour and Contrast--Shouting and Whispering; Pulsing, Patterning, Leading and Directing; and Real and Not-So-Real.
