Empire State Building to get a makeover., 06/18/14, Sherwell

While Manhattan's landmark Empire State Building is a tourist magnet that draws millions of visitors each year, the 103-story skyscraper has long been viewed as somewhat out of date for those who work inside of it. The owners of the Art Deco landmark are now embarking on a major overhaul of the interiors as they vie for tenants in one of the world's most lucrative and competitive commercial office markets. At the center of the renovation is a 15,000-square-foot fitness facility for tenants and their staffers. The overhaul will also include a white tablecloth restaurant aimed at the business market, along with a sizable new conference center. Many Manhattan neighborhoods are packed with trendy bars, restaurants and coffee shops. However, the streets around the Empire State Building are still lined with tourist shops and less-than-enticing eateries. Empire State Realty Trust, the building's owners, are hoping to fill the gap for those who work in what is still one of the largest office buildings in the world. The revamp began with a restoration of the marble lobby and sorely needed upgrades to the building's mechanics and lifts.
